Land Casinos vs Online
Las Vegas casinos are really beautiful; many have spectacular fountains, glorious indoor and outdoor gardens, and amazing pools and spas. However, these buildings, grounds, and facilities were really expensive to built, and are even more costly to maintain.
Online casinos, on the other hand, do not have pricey overhead expenses at all, and are able to pass these savings on to their customers. For this reason, online casinos offer payout rates that are considerably higher than those offered at brick and mortar casinos in Las Vegas- or anywhere else in the world, for that matter. Online casino payout rates are compiled on a monthly basis by the Online Players Association (OPA), an internet casino players’ advocacy group. According to the OPA payout compilation for this month, the following online casinos offer the highest payout rates in the internet gaming industry:
Tribes do not have to report publicly their profit or what is paid out to patrons. In six years, casino-style gambling on Indian land in California has grown to a $7 billion-a-year industry, according to the Indian Gaming Industry Report.
So it pays to ensure that customers think they have a fair shot at winning.
A survey of the county's Indian casinos showed two – Valley View and Pauma in North County – post any sort of payout percentages, and then only on a handful of thousands of slot machines.
One neon sign at Pauma reads “97.4 percent payback” (with maximum bet) above several Triple Double machines; another reads “98 percent payback” for certain Bar/7 machines. At Valley View, a lone neon sign reads “98 percent payback” above Triple Red Hot machines.
Viejas' Frank said most local casinos “would probably supply (payout information) if they were asked.”
“We don't often get questioned about it,” said Norm DesRosiers, a member of the Viejas gaming commission.
Posting payouts these days is a complicated task, DesRosiers said, because many modern, computer-driven slot machines offer multiple games and multiple denominations, “and the payback percentages are different for each one.”
“But by law, the technological specifications we have adopted in (San Diego County) require a minimum of 80 percent payback,” DesRosiers said. “And that is tested and verified on every machine by an independent testing lab and verified by us.
“Most casinos, though, would never stay in business with that low of a payback. Most casinos here set their machines between 88 and 96 percent (payout).”
That range is consistent with casinos in Las Vegas, said Jerry Markling, chief of enforcement for the Nevada Gaming Board. But some San Diego County players aren't buying it.
Ways to win at slot machines: The EconomistThis post was originally made by a MBA student to http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2004/4/23/162731/687. It's reprinted here more or less intact... The economists in the house tell us (and they give a compelling and legit argument) that it is OK and to play online slots even if the odds are against you.--While getting my MBA one of the concepts that I actually found pretty interesting was the utility curve theory of money. The way it works, basically, is to look at the marginal utility of each additional dollar you have, rather than its fundamental economic value.
For instance, to a starving fellow in the street with no ready money at all, the marginal utility of a single dollar is incredibly high, as it can mean at least a bit of food that might literally wind up saving his life.
However, for me (luckily), my quality of life is so completely unchanged whether I have an additional dollar or not that its utility is extremely close to zero. I would likely never notice if a dollar happened to fall out of my wallet once a week for the rest of my life.
However, on the flip side, for me (unluckily, as I've not wealth of that magnitude), my quality of life would undergo pretty drastic changes were I to win the lottery.
So, while the utility lost to me from spending a dollar on a lottery ticket is extremely close to zero, the utility gained were I to win would be astoundingly large.
Therefore, it likely makes sense for me to subscribe to the lottery and have it auto-deduct and play a ticket for me on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The subscription/no-work-involved aspect is key, because if you add in the utility cost of actually physically going to buy a ticket you lose immediately. It must be as nearly zero-effort as possible in order to maintain the utility/quality-of-life positive balance.
Ideally, if I could literally forget it was even being played for me, aside from a $52 deduction per year out of my account, things would be nearly perfect. I'd never miss the $52 as far as my quality of life goes, and yet I'd always be poised for some pleasant surprise that would make my day/week/life.
Ways to win at slots: The online casino veteranThe casino veterans in the house agree with the economists. I play for two reasons.1. It's really fun. I really enjoy playing online slots.2. A few dollars here and there won't kill me. A million dollar windfall would sure be nice.3. I usually end up winning anyway, so (2) is kind of moot.
